Chiropractic and Pregnancy

At Windsor Chiropractic, we have a special interest in Pregnancy. A substantial number of our practice members seek our help for specific pregnancy-related conditions as well as part of their overall wellbeing goals.
Pregnant mothers have a greater chance of pelvic subluxation and neuro-biomechanical imbalance than the general population. This is due to a multitude of reasons including an increase of hormones, weight gain and postural adaptations.

Pregnancy-related conditions may include back pain, sciatica, pubis symphysis pain, hip and knee pain, and carpel tunnel syndrome, all of which can respond well.

Because Chiropractic adjustments can improve function by reducing nerve system stress (1), we believe pregnant mothers may experience significant benefits by having their spines checked regularly throughout pregnancy.

Our Chiropractors may be able to assist with common wellbeing goals, including optimal pelvic alignment (2), a more comfortable labour(2), maintaining posture, and ease with day-to-day activities. Chiropractic can also alleviate general pain and stiffness, which may improve disturbed sleep patterns.

Our Pregnancy Techniques

If you’ve never been to a Chiropractor before, you’ll be relieved to know that our techniques are safe, comfortable and effective. Our Chiropractors have spent countless hours refining and developing skills and knowledge for pregnancy care. We also use special pregnancy cushions which allow you to lie down in a supported way.

The Webster Technique

The Webster Technique is a specific pregnancy technique, developed by Dr. Larry Webster, founder of the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association (ICPA). The technique aims to provide a safe means to restore proper pelvic balance and function.
The Webster Technique can be used on the usual musculoskeletal pains associated with pregnancy. It can also help to alleviate the tightening and torsion of specific pelvic muscles and ligaments which anatomically connect from the pelvis to the uterus.

The ICPA recognises that difficult labours can occur from inadequate uterine function, pelvic contraction, and baby mal-presentation. When this is related to pelvic alignment, Chiropractic may help.

It is important to note that the Webster Technique does not work by trying to ‘push’ (or 'treat' in an Obstetrics manner) a baby into position, but rather, by simply improving alignment and removing any associated soft tissue restraint around the baby in the uterus. It is an extremely gentle technique. There are cases published in chiropractic literature that support this theory. More research is needed and is currently underway by the ICPA.

We also use a combination of tried-and-tested Chiropractic techniques which primarily focus on stabilising the pelvis. In so doing, neuro-biomechanical function in the pelvis is improved. For more details on these techniques, click on Our Approach and Techniques.

Pilates & Yoga

When pelvic ligaments stretch and the pelvis starts to become unstable, the joints and nerves of the pelvis (sacroiliac joints) can directly weaken the core muscles and create muscle spasms around the hips. This is where Chiropractic works beautifully with both the Pilates and Yoga exercise regimes. Chiropractic appears to help the effects of exercise by balancing joint and muscle function, while whole body exercises like Pilates and Yoga can build endurance and strength, essential for childbirth! It is important to correct imbalances and pain before exercise, as you do not want to strengthen a problem.

We offer Yogababy Pregnancy Yoga at our second Brisbane northside Practice, Stafford Chiropractic & Wellbeing Centre. Practice owners, Alan and Megs used Yogababy throughout all three pregnancies and are delighted to be working with Yogababy again to bring pregnancy yoga to their practice members.

Pregnancy yoga involves more than just strengthening your core muscles. It’s about connecting yourself emotionally to your body and your baby. Yogababy also offers some great courses aimed at empowering mothers and birth partners in the lead-up to, and during the birth of the baby.

“Yogababy gave me the tools to support my wife during the birth process to assist in the delivery of all three of our children.”

Massage and Acupuncture

Our Chiropractors work closely with Massage Therapists and Acupuncturists. We have a Massage Therapist at our Stafford practice, who works with many of our pregnant practice members.

It is important to understand that in some cases of pelvic instability, the muscles will spasm to protect and prevent the pelvis from giving way and becoming more unstable. In this case, attempting to remove the spasm through massage or stretching can further aggravate the problem. This is where Chiropractors can be beneficial in balancing the pelvis and activating the muscles to stabilise the pelvis before further therapeutic treatment.

Our Chiropractors also work with local Acupuncturists, AcuHealth. In cases of incorrect foetal position, acupuncture uses different methods to encourage the baby to move into a more optimal position for birth.
